Mycorrhizae (myco), or beneficial fungi is a secret weapon for pumpkin growers. When you inoculate your pumpkin plants roots with the mycorrhizal fungi powder, it grows into this white mold that surrounds the pumpkins roots. This symbiotic relationship benefits both the pant and the fungi. The fungi brings more water and nutrients to the plant, and the plant provides the fungi with nutrients it needs to survive. It essentially doubles what the roots alone are capable of.
The fungi takes about a month to establish so it’s best if you start your pumpkins indoors in a pot if you chose to use it, but you will be amazed by the results come harvest. I would mix 1 tablespoon of the inoculant in the soil. I use those small jiffy cardboard pots that you can drop directly into the soil. They rapidly decompose and the roots grow right through them. I dig a hole in the ground to fit the pot and ensure my drip tape is working by turning on the irrigation system for about 1 hour and let the dirt get good and wet. The soil needs to be moist before putting the pots in the ground. Pop the pots in the ground, and bury the plants. Couldn’t be easier.
This is the brand that I have used in the past and have had great success with.
